About College Police Departments
College Police Officers function as the college's Police and have the same powers as any other police officer. Most Colleges have University Police Departments, with the same training and standards. College Police Departments across the country are currently armed although arming of officers is at the discretion of each college president.Less than 30 percent of the property taken in thefts is recovered. Most of that property cannot be returned to the rightful owner as it is unidentifiable as belonging to the victim. This means much of the recovered property is sold at college police auctions, destroyed, or shockingly, returned to the thief upon demand when the actual ownership cannot be established. As a result, the efforts of the police are neutralized and the thief profits from the crime with less risk of apprehension.
Your college Police Department is taking positive action to minimize the risk of theft and to help ensure the return of stolen property should a theft occur. This positive action is Operation Identification. This program has proven beyond a reasonable doubt to be a definite deterrent to the potential burglar or thief by assuring him/her the stolen property can be identified by the police anywhere in California as belong to YOU.
The College Police Department is dedicated to providing the highest degree of protection possible to you and your possessions.
Officers usually patrol the campus and surrounding community on foot, mountain bike, and police cruisers on a 24-hour basis. Generally, there are two police officers assigned to a shift along with one police sergeant. Police sergeants supervise the activities of the police officers and serve as a liaison for the Chief of Police.
